Understanding Rifle Bedding

The goal of rifle bedding is simple: minimize any movement between the rifle and the stock so the action returns to the same position shot to shot, producing the tightest, most repeatable groups.

To deliver on that objective, every Naylor Biathlon Stock integrates a Pillar Bedded Aluminum V-Block. This process delivers the most robust, longest-lasting, and accurate solution available for your biathlon rifle.

Our rifle bedding contains the following three components:

1. Aluminum V-Block

Our aluminum V-block is constructed with a single piece of CNC-machined aluminum that seats the rifle squarely and establishes a rigid, repeatable alignment point. The Anschütz 1827F’s undersurface is curved with two parallel edges; when placed into the V, those edges naturally centre the action.

When the bedding bolts are tightened, the action aligns to the barrel’s centre axis and the bedding bolt centreline, producing consistent positioning across all 1827F rifles.

While the rifle is supported on the V-block, the remainder of the action and the barrel remain free-floating within the stock to preserve harmonic consistency.

The V-block design maintains centring even with thermal expansion, so the action stays located relative to the bedding under changing temperatures.

2. Aluminum Pillars

We connect anodized aluminum pillars to the underside of our aluminum V-block, to ensure a complete, metal-to-metal connection all the way through.

Like the V-block, this prevents any shifts that may occur from an event of forceful contact and thermal expansion. This completely mitigates any issues related to wood cracking or expanding.

3. Dual Pin Recoil Lug

Our rifle bedding uses two hardened stainless-steel recoil-lug pins permanently bonded in the V-block. Together with the bedding bolts, these pins ensure the rifle sits parallel to the bedding when secured.

Both pins are levelled to provide a very small clearance for the recoil-lug slot, ensuring the rifle bears against the V-block rather than the tops of the pins.

We use two pins over the traditional flattened steel to ensure there are two points of contact on the recoil-lug slot, for greater consistency every time the rifle is secured.

What's Left to Know

Naylor Biathlon Stocks are neither designed for nor should be combined with epoxy bedding. Aluminum rifle beddings outperform pre-molded epoxy bedded rifles in longevity and consistency.

Since 2023, we have been the first North American producers of wood biathlon stocks to integrate this technology, and among the first to offer it commercially worldwide.
