A biathlon front sight is built from a small set of interchangeable pieces. Together they establish where the front half of your sight picture sits, how much daylight surrounds your target, and how consistently that picture repeats shot after shot.
Front sights attach to the barrel from below, secured by two screws that pass up through the barrel block into the base of the sight housing. This keeps the sight low-profile and rigidly fixed in place, with no lateral play once properly torqued.
Understanding how each of these pieces works is important in evaluating the benefit they offer to your position and shooting preferences.
The goal of this article is to broadly review each of the components in a biathlon front sight system, examine how they work, and what role they play for you.
1. The Aperture
The aperture is the piece an athlete looks through to align with the rear sight and the target. Unlike the rear aperture, which is a plain ring, front apertures come in a couple of common styles:
- Cross-bar style. The standard style equipped to many rifles, this appears as a ring with a horizontal line bisecting it on either side, leaving the centre open. This style works well to align the sight picture with a target row, and ensure that the rifle is level with its larger horizontal reference.
- Post style. This style appears as a single vertical line rising from the bottom of the ring up to the center, forming a post that the athlete aligns beneath the target. This style increases the amount of visibility within the aperture, making target acquisition easier.
Apertures are also available in different sizes. The sizes are calculated in milimetres, and refer to the interior diameter of the centre of the aperture in which the target is seen. These sizes may range from as low as 2 mm to 5 mm.
The choice between style comes down largely to personal preference and what an athlete finds easiest to align consistently.

Apertures are interchangeable within the same front sight housing by simply unscrewing the front sight tunnel, so athletes can test different styles without replacing the sight itself.
For beginner athletes, standard styles and sizes of aperture are recommended.
2. Riser Sets
As with rear sights, riser sets raise the front sight to match an athlete's stock and cheek position. Anschütz front sight risers are available in two mounting styles depending on rifle age, 6865 model, and the newer Luxus 6870 Front Sight.
These typically move in increments of 8 mm. Models such as Peter Fortner's Adjustable Front Sight, move in increments of 1.5 mm in a sawtooth pattern.
Whichever the model, the most important feature for a front sight to have is the ability for height adjustment.
Please note, the amount the front sight is raised should be matched in the rear sight to a near identical amount. Height differences between the two that are greater than 2 mm may restrict the vertical movement of the diopter. Attention should be given to ensuring these dimensions are always equal.
3. Snow Cover /
A front sight snow cover protects both the sight housing and the barrel from moisture and ice buildup, in the same way a rear sight cover protects the diopter.
The rubber plug fitted to the end of the cover is just as important as the cover itself, as it seals the muzzle end of the barrel. Protecting the barrel exit, one of the most important points along the bullet's path, from moisture and debris helps preserve the barrel's ability to send each shot on a consistent trajectory.
4. Front Sight Size
Front sights are available in two common diameters:
- 18 mm. The standard and most common size, and one that proves adequate for the large majority of athletes.
- 22 mm. A larger option that expands the amount of area the sight ring occupies within the sight picture, useful for athletes who prefer a bigger visual reference.
Choice between the two is a matter of preference rather than performance advantage, and either can be paired with either aperture style.
